GI BJJ
Gi (pronounced "ghee") Brazilian jiu-jitsu focuses on grappling with a particular emphasis on ground grappling while wearing the traditional training garment known as the gi, or kimono. The jacket and pants of the gi are made of heavy-duty cotton and are meant to simulate clothing worn during everyday life, while being more durable than regular wear. Emphasis is put upon manipulation of the gi for control of the opponent.
Both Gi and No Gi is included in a BJJ membership.
NO GI BJJ
No gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu also focuses on grappling with a particular emphasis on ground grappling, but is done without the traditional gi. Participants wear shorts or tights and a t-shirt or rash guard. The manipulation of an opponents clothing is prohibited, making gripping and control of an opponent more difficult than in the gi. Both Gi and No Gi is included in a BJJ membership.
MUAY THAI
Muay Thai (literally “Thai boxing”) is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the "art of eight limbs" as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins. Participants should wear shorts and t-shirt and have their own boxing gloves. Classes consist of a warm up, fundamental technique, bag and pad work, shadow boxing, drills and conditioning.
KIDS CLASSES
Our kids program is separated by age (4-6 year olds in one group and 7&UP in another) and focuses solely on GI BJJ. Initially your child will only require shorts and t-shirt, and it is always good to send them to class with a water bottle! Once they are committed to the program, a GI can be purchased at the academy.
"OPEN MAT"
Open Mat is just that: the mats are open for students to roll or rep. Most open mat sessions consist exclusively of rolling rounds of 6 minutes with 1-1/2 minutes of rest between rounds. There is no formal instruction at open mat.
